We all hear voices.
From when we wake up to when we fall asleep, voices arrive in our awareness from the external world and from our interior.
In my experience there is a kind of hierarchy of “loudness” of the voices. Some types of voices take up a lot of space front and center in our awareness and other types lay in repose in the background and must be sought out.
Compulsions, anxieties, madness and fears are the traditionally the loudest. They bluster, they scream.
Repetitive, habitual thoughts have a kind of almost mundane, but profound middle volume; an all-encompassing, pervasive white noise hum.
And, our highest wisdom not only does not yell, does not incessantly hum, it speaks so softly that we must become quite still and settle down to glean its message.
Whatever their volume, did you know we can interrogate those voices? Did you know we can, like a gatekeeper, or the troll under the bridge, ask a magical question before we let their messages into our realms or let them across our bridge?
If you’ve listened to The Dreaming, you will already know the magical question we can ask of any of the voices clamoring for our attention. This question works whether the voice is internal or external. It will help us know who to listen to and who to ask, politely, to get in the back seat.
