sky/hawk
vision 90

Welcome to our weekly practice.
I am sharing this flying meditation with everyone because it is a skillful practice for the moment we are in. In this meditation, as we get in touch with our inner hawk or eagle or falcon, may we remember that raptors (this family of birds) stay perched 95% of the time - these birds have sharp eyesight and take a lot of time to look carefully at things from above.
Here is the little talk -
Here is the meditation -
Enjoy the bird’s eye view!
Until next time,
Jess
p.s. Join us this Sunday morning (8:30am L.A. time) for a new, VERY CHILL, kind of thing -
8:30 to 9:30 will be gentle movement, energy clearing and meditation
9:30 to 10 we’ll do a guided coloring exercise (have paper and crayons, markers or colored pencils)
10 to 11ish will be spiritual-creative co-working/body doubling time - use your time to collage, color, journal, or whatever you are into
a little after 11 we will finish up with a peace meditation which will feel really good.
This is the first of these longer sessions. It is my experiment in creating coziness on the internet and using that space as a home base to tune to the imaginal.
Essentially, using the internet for good.
Join us if you can!
This event will not be recorded.
“I’m not telling you to make the world better, because I don’t think that progress is necessarily part of the package. I’m just telling you to live in it. Not just to endure it, not just to suffer it, not just to pass through it, but to live in it. To look at it. To try to get the picture. To live recklessly. To take chances. To make your own work and take pride in it. To seize the moment. And if you ask me why you should bother to do that, I could tell you that the grave’s a fine and private place, but none I think do there embrace. Nor do they sing there, or write, or argue, or see the tidal bore on the Amazon, or touch their children. And that’s what there is to do and get it while you can and good luck at it.”
― Joan Didion
“The world is a wonderfully weird place, consensual reality is significantly flawed, no institution can be trusted, certainty is a mirage, security a delusion, and the tyranny of the dull mind forever threatens - but our lives are not as limited as we think they are, all things are possible, laughter is holier than piety, freedom is sweeter than fame, and in the end it’s love and love alone that really matters.”
- Tom Robbins
Your lucky number is 3.14159
Your magic talisman is a thousand-year-old Joshua tree whose flowers blossom just one night each year and can only be pollinated by the yucca moth
Your special time of the day is the moment just before the mist evaporates
You have fire in your blood and sea salt in your tears
Your vision of power is the red-tailed hawk soaring over the shopping mall
The colors of your soul are ivory vermilion, sable, and jade
Your soil of destiny is peat moss
The legendary deed that most resembles the method in your madness is the story of the hero who tames the monster without touching it
You have a secret name that will be revealed to you very soon
Your sweet spot is between the true believers and the scoffing skeptics
Your holiest pain comes from your ability to sense other people’s cracked notions about you
Your magic verbs are dig, descend, and disclose
The garage sale item you most resemble is an old but beautiful and sonorous accordion with a broken key
Your mythic symbol is a treasure chest dislodged from its hiding place in the earth by a flood

“Whenever I start a person on Active Imagination, I get a series of questions: ‘How do I know that I’m not just making all this stuff up?’ ‘How can I talk with someone who is only a figment of my imagination?’ From my experience I am convinced that it is nearly impossible to produce anything in the imagination that is not an authentic representation of something in the unconscious. The whole function of imagination is to draw up the material of the unconscious, clothe it in images, and transmit it to the conscious mind. Whatever comes up in the imagination must have been living somewhere in the fabric of the unconscious before it was given an image-form by the imagination.
… When you being to see your imagination for what it really is, you will realize that it reflects the inner world of your unconscious as faithfully as a highly polished mirror.”

MEDITATIONS IN AN EMERGENCY
I wake up & it breaks my heart. I draw the blinds & the thrill of rain breaks my heart. I go outside. I ride the train, walk among the buildings, men in Monday suits. The flight of doves, the city of tents beneath the underpass, the huddled mass, old women hawking roses, & children all of them, break my heart. There’s a dream I have in which I love the world. I run from end to end like fingers through her hair. There are no borders, only wind. Like you, I was born. Like you, I was raised in the institution of dreaming. Hand on my heart. Hand on my stupid heart.

“When all the ordinary divides and patterns are shattered, people step up to become their brother’s keepers. And that purposefulness and connectedness bring joy even amidst death, chaos, fear and loss.”
- Rebecca Solnit
“Many of the most luminous gifts of our lives arrive as complete surprises. A gift is the most beautiful of intrusions. It arrives undeserved and unexpected. It comes ashore in our hearts carefully formed to fix exactly the shape of a hunger we might not even know we had. The gift comes with no price tag, no demand that puts us under an obligation. Every gift has an inner lamp that casts a new brightness over an undiscovered field of the heart. In this light we discover and bring to birth something new within us. Regardless of how carefully we examine the path of its arrival, the eyes of our mind can never unveil the true source of the gift. The gift keeps its reason secret. Some unexpected path opened in the interim world and the gift was already on its way towards us.”
- John O’Donohue, Beauty
“If I lose the light of the sun, I will write by candlelight, moonlight, no light. If I lose paper and ink, I will write in blood on forgotten walls. I will write always. I will capture nights all over the world and bring them to you.”
- Henry Rollins
“Make room for a tiny increment of magical focus for outsize results: these times are difficult for a number of well-documented reasons but as you may have noticed, Magic is still here and quietly becoming stronger.”
- Mystic Medusa
In my way of thinking, anything is possible. Life is at the bottom of things and belief at the top, while the creative impulse, dwelling in the center, informs all. We imagine a house, a rectangle of hope. A room with a single bed with a pale coverlet, a few precious books, a stamp album. Walls papered in faded floral fall away and burst as a newborn meadow speckled with sun and a stream emptying into a greater stream where a small boat awaits with two glowing oars and one blue sail.
- Patti Smith
